Leisure facilities: | In the town Löningen, there are three sports halls, an open-air wave pool and an indoor swimming pool. These are enlivened and complemented by the extensive sport division offers in the clubs. For these purposes there are a number of different sports fields, a tennis complex, a skate course, riding arenas, the River Hase and numerous cycle trails that lead through the beautiful area of the municipality. Other sports facilities exist in other towns and farming communities. |
Cultural facilities: | An absolute must is a visit to the 250 year-old Schutenmühle windmill, in which civil marriage ceremonies are also performed. In the picturesque Heimathaus museum of local history next door, which also houses a cosy café, changing exhibitions are held (at weekends and by appointment). Larger cultural events take place in the Forum Hasetal Platz, which is also ideal for conventions and meetings. Tour guides take visitors on a walk through the renovated town centre or organise tours of the area. The recurring offers available include herbal tours, hikes through the Hahnenmoor and a visit to a fruit press. A visit to the Catholic St. Vitus Church is also something that should not be missed. The landmark of Löningen is considered the largest pillarless hall church in Germany. |

Comment on the transport infrastructure: | Not only in recent decades, but for over a century now, the European highway E 233 (called the B 213 in Germany) has been the Löningen lifeline. Most of the goods produced here are transported via this important long-haul trunk road and almost all key raw materials and most other commodities reach the commercial and industrial companies along the B 213 via this highway. It is the fastest connection between the Amsterdam/Rotterdam and Bremen/Hamburg metropolitan regions. The shorter northeast section links the Weser-Ems Region with the A 1 motorway (Hansalinie) and creates access to the most important German North Sea ports. The longer the southwest section runs between the Dutch-German border at Nordhorn and the A 29 access point Ahlhorn and connects the German Northwest to the international maritime and aviation centres of the Dutch Randstad metropolitan region. For many years, the responsible politicians in the region, supported by the chambers of industry and commerce and the industrial companies along the B 213 between the Netherlands and the access point to the A 1 motorway, have therefore been pressing for the four-lane expansion of this important highway. They all teamed up a number of years ago to form the supraregional, interstate Städtering (city ring) Zwolle-Emsland. One of the greatest successes of those involved to date has been the keenly promoted planning right for the expansion of approx. 80-km-long route. By joining forces, the project was included in the priority needs of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. With the four-lane expansion, the significance of Löningen as a hub of transport infrastructure is increasing on the E 233. Thanks to the Löningen freight village, containers can be transshipped from road to rail and from rail to road at a central point between the metropolitan regions of Amsterdam/Rotterdam and Bremen/Hamburg. |
