The university city of Oldenburg, with a current population of around 170,000, is the economic, scientific, administrative and cultural center of the Weser-Ems region. At the same time, Oldenburg is the third largest city in Lower Saxony. Banks and insurance companies have their headquarters in the service metropolis, various administrations and different jurisdictions are located here; at the same time, large manufacturing companies have also settled here. Thanks to the quantitative and qualitative concentration of entrepreneurial know-how and scientific expertise, the city is developing into a center of sustainable energy management and IT services.
With the Carl von Ossietzky University, three universities of applied sciences and more than 70 general, vocational, technical and private schools, Oldenburg is the educational center of the region. Oldenburg is also a medical care center in the northwest. This position is strengthened by the medical degree program offered by the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen since October 2012.
The short distances to Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover and the proximity to the Netherlands and the North Sea - and therefore also to Germany's only deep-water port in Wilhelmshaven - also make Oldenburg such an attractive location.
